Samsung Wave 3

By Siddhartha Sharma RSS Siddhartha Sharma posted Dec 17th 2011 at 12:18AM | Filed under: Mobile » Smartphone

Pros:

Great form-factor
Great battery life
Good 5MP camera

Cons:

Bada OS
Price

The Bottom Line

Samsung Wave 3 is a good phone, no doubt, but does not offer as much as other smartphones in the mid-range category. If you have 20k to spare for a toy phone and if you are not an Angry Bird fan, then the Samsung Wave 3 is a phone tailor made for you.

FULL REVIEW

In the past I have always had a soft corner for Samsung’s Wave smartphones. They offer a decent touch experience, good build quality and of course, a very sharp and nice camera at the back. One area where they actually lack is the Bada OS that they use. Almost a year after the launch of the Wave 2, the Wave 3 S8600 makes its way into a very different looking market. Now Android phones have similar pricing, so that is no longer a factor for smartphone users to prefer a Wave phone over an upmarket Android handset. But Wave 3 lives up to its price tag and comes out as a winner for sure, if we ignore its limited app support.

Design And Looks

Unlike the Galaxy smartphones from Samsung, the Wave 3 has a  metal finish in its built. It is slim and lightweight. Upfront the phone has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display which is very beautiful to look at. Wave 3 has a good grip, feels good to hold and it makes you wish that Samsung made this phone with Android. The Wave 3 has a great battery performance and can last for about one and a half day under moderate usage.

Features

The Samsung Wave 3 is a Bada OS smartphone with a 4-in Super AMOLED display (800x480 pixels resolution). It also features TouchWIZ 4.0 UI that's also on the new Galaxy smartphones such as the S2 and the more recent, Note. The Wave 3 relies on the Samsung App store which is not good when it comes to variety, so don’t think that even after buying a 20K phone you’ll be able to play Angry Birds on it. The app store currently has near about just 8000 apps. The Wave 3 does come with a couple of neat pre-installed apps like Chat On- a messaging service like What's App and Blackberry Messenger. AllShare allows you to share media content across DLNA compatible devices and Wi-Fi Direct similarly lets you transfer files between compatible devices. The Wave 3 also has a 5MP auto-focus camera, with an LED flash, capable of shooting 720p videos. It's powered by a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor and offers 4GB of internal storage, you can expand the memory via a microSD card up to 32GB. The Wave 3 supports Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G pretty much everything that a smartphone must have.

Camera

The Wave has a very good camera for both indoor and outdoor photography. The camera does very good 720p HD video recording similar to its predecessors. The flash on the smartphone is not that powerful but you can live with that. 5MP camera I must say is one of the best in class.

Verdict

Samsung Wave 3 is a good phone no doubt but does not offer much whereas other smartphones in this mid range have many things to offer. I still believe that Samsung can load an Android OS on the Wave 3 and do away with Bada then its for sure a super phone in a mid range smartphone category. If you wish to get refreshment and have 20k spare for a toy phone and obviously you are not an angry bird fan the Samsung Wave 3 is a phone tailor made for you.
