Report analyzing development freedom in open-source projects

By Faiyaz Shaikh RSS Faiyaz Shaikh posted Aug 15th 2011 at 9:57AM | Filed under: PC & Laptop » Software

For a long time, proponents of open-source technology have been at odds with supporters of proprietary technology. However, lately there has been a seemingly significant shift in this relationship with some giant technology corporations taking up open-source model for their development projects. So, are these corporations truly experiencing a change of heart, or are they simply carrying the banner of open-source to win favor with a portion of a very vocal online community? VisionMobile, a market analysis firm, set out to index eight leading open-source platforms, based on their openness. To carry out this ranking process, VisionMobile has devised its own system called Open Governance Index that rates a project based on access to projects, transparency in the development process, restrictions on derivative technology and its community structure.
