Report analyzing development freedom in open-source projects
For a long time, proponents of open-source technology have been at odds with supporters of proprietary technology. However, lately there has been a seemingly significant shift in this relationship with some giant technology corporations taking up open-source model for their development projects. So, are these corporations truly experiencing a change of heart, or are they simply carrying the banner of open-source to win favor with a portion of a very vocal online community? VisionMobile, a market analysis firm, set out to index eight leading open-source platforms, based on their openness. To carry out this ranking process, VisionMobile has devised its own system called Open Governance Index that rates a project based on access to projects, transparency in the development process, restrictions on derivative technology and its community structure. This is a summary of the entire effort by VisionMobile, which ranks projects based on their over ‘Open Governance’. It is not surprising to see Android right at the bottom of the ranking with an abysmal score of just 23% openness.
