PC game buying guide: Digital distribution systems
The usefulness and profitability of PC as a gaming platform has its fair share of critics and supporters. While the platform may have been sidelined in the past couple of years by the popularity of game consoles and sheer marketing force behind it, the PC gaming business has been gradually shifting from store shelves to online distribution.
Valve Corporation was perhaps the first significant player to enter the business with the launch of Steam alongside Half-Life 2. Since them Steam had secured a firm position at the top, while the competition is gathering in numbers to challenge Valve.

GameStop is a giant in the brick-and-mortar side of game retailing, and it recently entered the digital distribution business with its acquisition of Stardock’s Impulse service. The service is still in a nascent stage, but this one is definitely the one to look out for.
