Sony unveils cameras with translucent mirror technology

By Faiyaz Shaikh RSS Faiyaz Shaikh posted Aug 24th 2010 at 8:37PM | Filed under: Photo & Printer » Camera

Sony has announced plans to release the SLT A55 and SLT A33 cameras later this year. These will be the first to use the company’s translucent mirror design, which apparently allows unprecedented levels of phase detection. “Single Lens Translucent” (SLT) gets its name from the use of a translucent mirror to spilt the light between the AF sensor and main imaging sensor.

The SLT A55 will sport a 16.2MP sensor, while the SLT A33 will get a 14.2 MP an imaging sensor. Both the units will get a 3” LCD screen, will be capable of full HD (1080i) motion capture, burst recording at maximum frame-rate of 10fps and wide panoramic capture. The A55 will come with an additional perk in the form of built-in GPS, which lets the camera automatically geo-tag photographs and video recordings.

Sony plans to release A55 in October with a price-tag of USD 749 and the A33 is expected to be available later in October, with a unit price of USD 649.
