Hitachi developing 4TB Thunderbolt external hard-drive for some heavy-lifting

By Faiyaz Shaikh RSS Faiyaz Shaikh posted Sep 14th 2011 at 7:02AM | Filed under: PC & Laptop » Storage

G-RAID hard-drive with Thunderbolt interface is currently under works at Hitachi under the moniker of G-Technology. The drive has been specifically designed for professionals who deal not only with huge volume of data, but also very large files.

Inside the aluminum enclosure will be two 4TB hard-drives in a RAID-0 configuration for maximum throughput. The aluminum body will function like a heat sink and an internal fan will keep the air-flow going. The 4TB G-RAID drive will run only on the Thunderbolt interface, whereas a single-drive G-DRIVE will sport eSATA, FireWire 800 (FireWire 400 via cable) and USB 2.0 interfaces and support for Windows file systems. These drives are a while away from hitting stores, with the release window set for the first quarter of 2012.
