FreeMind is open-source mind map creation software written in Java and distributed under GNU GPL V2+ license. Mind maps are typically used to jot down ideas and tasks or to track projects in a non-linear fashion. The proponents of mind maps consider them to be an intuitive and efficient method of recording and retrieving large amount of information.

Free Mind has some nifty features such as support for hyperlinks; drag ‘n drop and copying-pasting of plain and formatted text. The maps created in Free Mind can be exported in an HTML format and the information is stored by the application in XML format. These two features, especially the use of XML, make the maps widely compatible with other applications.
