Amazon taking pre-orders on solar-powered netbook by Samsung

By Faiyaz Shaikh RSS Faiyaz Shaikh posted Jul 11th 2011 at 6:12AM | Filed under: PC & Laptop » Netbook

Netbook development appears to be always skewed towards those who want to get some of that modern-world goodness, but are unable or unwilling to make a substantial investment. Samsung’s NC215S seems to fit that bill perfectly with a built-in solar panel and a fairly modest asking price of $399. The solar panel is apparently not meant to be the primary source of power for this netbook as it gives just one hour of usage on a two-hour charge.

This netbook’s central processor is an Intel ATOM N570 clocked at 1.66 GHz and it gets to work with 1GB of DDR3 RAM. The screen is a 10.1 inch matte-finish LCD with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, and the entire package weighs about 1.3 kg. Connectivity options include Bluetooth v3.0, Wi-Fi (802.11bg/n) and Ethernet. It will come pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter edition on a 250GB hard-disk. This netbook hasn’t hit the retail shelves yet; however, Amazon has initiated pre-orders for it with release date currently set for July 17.
