Apple gives Mac mini a new lick [update]
Alongside the release of an OS update and a new display based on their Thunderbolt technology, Apple has upgraded the specs for Mac mini. Part of this upgrade carries or makes provision for the other two releases. This new model of Mac mini sports a Thunderbolt port and is factory-installed with OS X Lion. Choice in central processors now includes dual-core Intel Core i5 processor for workstations and quad-core Intel Core i7 for the server variety of Mac mini. Graphical processing of Mac mini also got a bump with AMD’s Radeon HD 6630M graphics card now being a standard feature. These devices ship without a DVD drive, so all optical disc access will have to be carried out over a local network using its built-in Wi-Fi transceiver.

The leanest Mac mini kit includes a 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 500GB hard-drive, 2GB DDR3 RAM. This configuration has a suggested retail price of Rs. 33,900 Rs. 44,900, with an option to upgrade to 4GB RAM and 750GB hard-drive. The other workstation configuration includes a faster dual-core Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 2.5 GHz, 4GB of DDR RAM and a 500GB hard drive. This bump in memory and processor will cost you Rs. 44,900 Rs. 54,900. Upgrade options includes doubling-up the RAM to 8GB and getting a 750GB hard-drive. Additionally, a 256GB SSD is also an upgrade option that can be purchased as a replacement or additional storage.

Lastly, the server edition of Mac mini comes with an Intel 2.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and two 500GB hard-disk drives. Factory installed operating system is the Lion Server edition of OS X. The suggested retail price by Apple for this configuration is Rs. 54,900 Rs. 56,900. Optionally, storage for this version of Mac mini can be increased to a pair of 750GB HDD or two 256GB SSD.
