MSI WindPad 100 and 110 - Atom and Tegra 2 tablets announced
MSI’s 100 and 110 series WindPads, announced today at Computex take different approaches as iPad rivals. One runs on an Intel Atom and Windows 7, the other on Tegra 2 and Android. Both WindPads will have flexible connectors and connectivity options out of the box, and are expected to retail at a price point that is lower than a 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad by the end of the year.
The WindPad 100 is a 10.1-inch tablet powered by a 1.66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB SSD storage, has USB and HDMI ports, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium with a Wind Touch UI layer. According to Engadget’s sources, the WindPad 100 will be available at the US dollar price of an iPad - $499. With built-in connectivity USB and HDMI connectivity, you’ll need fewer third party accessories to connect your camera, hard drive, or MP3 player. MSI will probably bundle cables and power adapters, so the WindPad 100 will bring all of Windows strengths: cheap, expandable, will run a large number of free apps and utilities, and of course, run Flash. The only question is whether it can do 1080p with that Atom processor, and battery life, in comparison to an ARM based tablet.
The MSI WindPad 110 will be running on nVidia’s Tegra 2 chipset and Android 2.1, it has a 10-inch capacitive screen, the tablet has a sleeker design and is more lightweight and power-efficient than the Atom-based WindPad 100. It comes with built-in USB and HDMI connectivity, but lacks access to the Android marketplace. The WindPad 110 will be priced at $399.
