Government may discontinue the production of Aakash tablets

All the buzz-created by the World’s cheapest tablet Aakash could soon be forgotten. A recent report by India Today states that the Union human resource development (HRD) ministry may refuse to extend the letter of credit (LC) to DataWind, the makers of Aakash, after tablet users filed a series of complaints about the performance of the tablet.

Along with the shortcomings in the device, including defective OS, and poor battery retention capacity, users have also been disappointed with the customer service provided by the tablet distributors.
The government apart from dumping these inefficient and problematic tablets to rural villages, might just give up on this entire project, the report claims.
Sources, also say that the idea Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is now working on its fourth generation (4G) latest tablet, priced at around Rs 3500. The 4G long term evolution (LTE) network has much higher speed than the 3G network and many companies are planning to launch the 4G network worldwide this year. If these rumors are true then RIL may team-up with Datawind or some other firm to launch its 4G tablet.
Aakash might or might not survive, but the launch of this tablet has surely sparked ambitious ideas in the minds of other tablet manufacturers, to come up with their own versions of low-cost tablets, and cater to the growing demands of the consumers in India.
