Nokia N8 connects to pen drives, other phones via USB On-The-Go

The Nokia N8 has yet to be released, but sneak previews of its capabilities have already set the Web abuzz. The latest in the long feature list is USB On-The-Go (OTG) – the ability to connect to any USB device through a simple cable.

Often, we find ourselves carrying pen drives loaded up with data, but there's really no way to get that data onto our phones, apart from connecting the pen drive to a computer, transferring the data to the local hard disk and then connecting the phone to the computer and transferring the data again. Nokia N8 promises to make this simpler.

In a video posted on YouTube, user ahmedp800 demonstrates the phone's USB OTG capabilities by connecting a pen drive to the Nokia N8, which flawlessly shows up in the file manager just like it would one a PC. Then, ahmedp800 goes on to connect the Nokia C5 phone to the N8 and it too shows up as an external memory device, allowing for fast phone-to-phone transfer. When you have a microSD card of 8GB or 16GB loaded on your phone, this could prove to be a major boon!

Ahmedp800 notes that the Nokia N8 works only with FAT32 pen drives and would not connect to NTFS. Also, he wrote that external hard drives could be connected too, as long as they had their own power source.
