HTC Hero may get Android 2.1 (Eclair) update in India by June

Update: 2.1 firmware is available for Indian users of the HTC Hero. More here. We're somewhat pleased to have a confirmation in the form of a vague response from HTC Support that says that the Android 1.5 Cupcake based Hero phone will get an upgrade to Android 2.1 Eclair: “You may get the upgrade by the end of June” is the declaration, and may not inspire much as much confidence as "will get", but we're already at the end of May now, so if you own a HTC Hero handset, you should at least give it a month before installing a custom ROM that could potentially void the warranty. HTC Hero users on Sprint got the 2.1 update in the US last week, the update also adds enhancements to Sense UI, the default homescreen navigation app, can handle multiple Gmail accounts and improves email support overall, is capable of using speech recognition as a mode of text input. Be warned though: The firmware update erases all your phone data, Sprint's software upgrade guide asks that you sync your calendar and contacts, text and picture messages first. You can’t be running version 1.5 apps on a 2.1 phone, so all your apps will have to be re-downloaded as well.
WARNING: During the upgrade process, do not attempt to make/receive calls, press any buttons on your device or disconnect the device from the USB cable as this will stop the update and your device may be rendered inoperable!
