Reliance launches mobile app store in India with GetJar
Reliance Communications has entered into a strategic alliance with Apps store GetJar to create a free mobile apps store for their handsets. Users can download apps straight from the website and load it to their phone using a data cable, but for over 100m R-COM subscribers, the service will offer straight downloads to the phone at 50 paise per MB of usage.
GetJar's library of applications will be reportedly offered across GSM and CDMA networks, and will be hosted on the R-world portal. GetJar has a catalogue of over 65,000 free mobile applications that work on over 1700 handsets, supporting BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Android, and Java ME platforms.
The site has over 15 million users in 200 countries, about 300,000 software developers have used this service resulting in nearly 900 million downloads, according to Wikipedia. A list of top apps, globally, from the GetJar Blog: Social media and messagging apps are at the top of the list: Facebook Mobile, eBuddy, Nimbuzz, Snaptu, qeep. Non social media apps on this list include Opera Mini, Google search and Maps, LPlayer, and Appy.
