No Google Goggles on HTC Tattoo?

By Sriram Sharma RSS Sriram Sharma posted Feb 22nd 2010 at 11:52PM | Filed under: Mobile » Apps

Google Goggles boggles the mind. It's really amazing tech that adds a 6'th sense interface to the Android. It uses the camera to bring another mode of input for searching information to the phone, and can be used to find out more information on a book or DVD, a landmark or a painting.

Ironically, Layar, a third party augumented reality app which has a lot of similar features to Google Googles works on the HTC Tattoo. Unlike Apple’s platform, with Android, the burden of providing the latest software updates falls on the manufacturer, and many have been fairly late on the uptake. According to some unconfirmed internet sources, a 2.1 update has been scheduled for Q2 for the Samsung Spica, but we aren’t sure if that is likely. Android v1.6 does not support Swype, Fring, Slidescreen, or Opera Mini as a quick search through the Marketplace revealed. Much to my disappointment, Bonsai Blast won’t show up on the search results either.  I found over ten free apps for checkers.

HTC's tweets don't mention the Tattoo either. With a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen, it's a fairly neutered Android experience phone to begin with. A Huwaei phone with similar dimensions, the Pulse Mini will be launched by T-mobile in the UK for under £100 (on a pay as you go plan). It requires a stylus, but runs 2.1.
