Free Indie Game for Android: Replica Island

The hottest apps are those that are free. Working exclusively under the cover of night, a two-man team has created Replica Island, a free game for anyone using an Android 1.5+ phone, preferably with a D-Pad or trackball. We tested it out on the HTC Hero, it works flawlessly. Its a sweet side scrolling game with over 40 levels, probably the best free game i've played on the Android since Bonsai Blast, and that's not paying much of a compliment. The iPhone and iPod touch can handle 3D games like Firemint's Real Racing, which is a good demonstration of the kind of game experiences that Apple can offer. Android games with 3D graphics are expected after the release 3 of the Android Native Development Kit. Replica Island's gameplay is well suited to the Android handset, the characters and animations were hand-drawn by Chris Puett and Genki Mine. The source code can be downloaded and modified and used to create new games by mega nerds who like that sort of thing. Team Replica has an hilarious press release to go with the launch: Worth a download. More information, including a development diary and game media, can be found on the Replica Island website, replicaisland.net. Source: Gizmodo
