First look: Google App Inventor

By Aditya Kshirsagar RSS Aditya Kshirsagar posted Jul 29th 2010 at 2:59PM | Filed under: Mobile » Apps

Google App Inventor is a simplified way to develop Android applications without the knowledge of scripting. Registrations went open for the Beta recently, and I managed to snag one. Critics have raised concerns claiming that Google is just trying to populate its app market. Nevertheless, Google App Inventor (GAI) has caught the attention of many for being able to let end users visually design applications. Here is a first look at GAI. GAI can be accessed when Google officially invites a person to do so.

Click here to apply. The best part being that it requires no installation and a project can be resumed from any computer from any place. The only requirement is to have a valid Google Mail ID. I was one of the lucky ones to get access to the same and was notified of the same by mail late last night.

What is GAI? Introduction to GAI
GAI is a simplified way of making Android apps, but even so, a tutorial is necessary. Start with adding your computer and your Android device to the program. There are different setup files available for a variety of OSes, which will install as App Inventor Extras. Hereon, follow the guidelines that are very simple to use.
Following the link from the email; it directs to a start up page.

First set up your phone and computer to get started. To start a project click on My Projects and a screen like one below will appear. This is the basic design of the application, which will be followed by editing blocks that is Java based.
This is the block editor where you can add conditional programming to the design prototype that you just made. There are built-in blocks or your definitions that you just made. The application inventor is actually fun - the layout is less like programming and more like solving a puzzle. The best fit of the puzzle goes on the wall; in this case you install it in your phone.
There will be many problems while starting up like the ones I am facing right now. Nevertheless, the Google group of App Inventors is very resourceful.
I have not been able to make an application yet. But will publish an update soon with a working application made with GAI.
