Sony’s joint venture with Samsung for LCD panel manufacturing is poised to dissolve soon with Samsung buying off Sony’s entire stake in the venture. While the two companies are yet to finalize of the final tab for this dissolution, they have confirmed the end of the venture that had started in 2004 under the moniker of S-LCD.

Sony had invested in Samsung’s panel factory to secure steady supply of LCD panels for its Bravia HDTV business. Sony’s TV business has been reportedly incurring loss for the past seven years after losing some of its foothold in this segment to other players. Sony seemingly hopes to save substantial amount of money by dissolving the S-LCD venture and slowly returning to profitability with its TV business. The company has confirmed that they will continue to buy LCD panels from Samsung, as well as other panel manufacturers.
