According to reports, Kashgari was on his way to New Zealand, fleeing from a call by Saudi clerics for his trail under apostasy, which carried a death penalty. He is currently being held in an undisclosed location in Malaysia and may likely face extradition to his home country. Human rights group and other international watchdog organization have criticized the Interpol for their part in Kashgari’s arrest. Malaysian police said that the man was detained at the airport "following a request made to [them] by Interpol", but the spokesperson for Interpol has denied any involvement of the agency in this matter, stating that “the assertion that Saudi Arabia used Interpol's system in this case is wholly misleading and erroneous.”
