Beware of the Facebook 'Most Hilarious Video' malware attack

By Mihir Patkar RSS Mihir Patkar posted May 31st 2010 at 5:20PM | Filed under: Internet » Social Media

Have you got a Facebook notification from one of your friends to check out a new video with this tagline: “This is (without a doubt) the most hilarious video ever! LOL!” If so, don't even think about clicking on it because this is the latest malware attack doing the rounds of the social networking site. It seems that every week, there's a new Facebook malware attack. This latest one, though, is quite dangerous because it takes your login details through a phishing scam as well as installs harmful malware on your PC.

Here's how it happens, as described by Websense: “Once you click on the link to view the video you are taken to a fake Facebook login page where you are tricked into entering your credentials. The login page look like the real thing except of course if you look at the address bar you can see that you're not on facebook.com. But users can easily be tricked into thinking that they temporarily were logged out of Facebook and to continue they have to login. ”Regardless of what you enter in the login form you are then taken to a page on the real Facebook site that asks you to allow the application to access your profile. If you allow that you're taken to a page saying that you need to upload your FLV Player to view the video. Downloading this further infects your computer, and can prompt more ways to get you to give out private information.” A friend of ours got hit by this attack and has had to completely format his PC as several antivirus suites were unable to remove the virus. So if you do see this link, we urge you not to click on it!
