UN backs ITU’s lobbying for rapid broadband development
United Nations Foundation has reportedly seconded ITU (International Telecommunications Union) claim that proliferation of broadband and wireless communication will address global development issues, and hence they should be declared as ‘basic human right’. Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation, believes that mobile subscriptions can somehow help in areas such as maternal and child health.

She further went on to claim that parts of the world where people do not have access to running water or electricity, may have access to cellular service, and this will miraculously lead to development. Maybe it’s just be, but pushing broadband and cellular technologies to people without access to clean water and electricity seems a little cruel and insensitive at the very least. Besides, doesn’t broadband and cellular service require electricity to function?
