BTJunkie goes offline amidst crackdown on file-sharing sites

Torrent indexing site BTJunkie has decided to voluntarily pull the plug on their service, lest they face the same fate as MegaUpload and The Pirate Bay. Earlier this year, a Swedish court judged that website’s founders and a financial backer guilty of copyright infringement, and sentenced them to a year in prison, along with a fine of 30 million kroner. This was preceded by a total crackdown on MegaUpload and other file-sharing websites like Filesonic.com, restricting its services.
Speaking with TorrentFreak, BTJunkie’s founder said that the legal actions taking against other file-sharing sites played an important role in making the difficult decision of shutting down their service. He went on to add that “the war is far from over for sure” and that there may still be a future for BitTorrent sites. BTJunkie has gone dark after providing torrent indexing services for about seven years, having been founded in June of 2005 and being one of the top five torrent sites with several million users.
