Rumour mills predict next-generation game consoles by 2012
If the rumors going around the game development circuit are true, then it would mean that the current generation of game consoles may be on their last leg. According to a report by Edge website, Ubisoft Montreal and certain EA studios are working on makeshift consoles that will form the basis of the next generation game console from Microsoft. According to the same source, “one major Sony-owned studio” has dedicated all its development resources towards PlayStation 3’s successor.

Such rumors have surfaced occasionally in the past and each time Sony and Microsoft have declined to comment. The two companies have discussed the idea and their opinion on the technology that will signify the next generation of game consoles; but beyond that they have not got into the gory details. So far, only Nintendo has showcased its upcoming console, the Wii U. Also, it hasn’t been long since both Microsoft and Sony released motion-sensing peripherals for their respective consoles, in the hopes of extending the life of their current generation hardware. Console wars are often hard fought and are expensive affairs for all parties involved, selling consoles at a loss just to capture market share. Microsoft and Sony may not be ready for another round just yet and besides, both seem to be currently distracted by the mobile business.
