Crackdown 2: After Blackberry, Government of India going after Google and Skype

By Faiyaz Shaikh RSS Faiyaz Shaikh posted Aug 31st 2010 at 5:56PM | Filed under: Mobile » Smartphone

Lately, Government of India appears to have enabled God-mode—first it was the expected, yet shameful CWG scam; followed by a pat on the back in the form of a pay-hike and now it appears the government wants to fulfil its voyeuristic fantasies. The showdown between RIM of Blackberry fame and Indian government has been in the news the last few days. While it would appear that this encounter has ended in an uneasy stalemate, Penny McRae of AFP reports  that the government will begin cracking down on Google and Skype. According to this report, the government’s hit-list includes VPN, VoIP services offered by Google and Skype. It cites an unknown “senior official” who confirmed that the government will begin sending notices to “all of them”—a notice that essentially says shape-up or ship-out.
