Android phones in India - The Android Tracker Project [updated]

By Sriram Sharma RSS Sriram Sharma posted Oct 19th 2010 at 5:22AM | Filed under: Mobile » Smartphone

Hello and welcome to the Android Phone Tracker Project, where we'll be maintaining a comprehensive list of Android phones launched in India.
Google has been innovating continuously, adding new features to the Android platform, and while Google's very own Nexus One is the best Android phone with the latest firmware, there are dozens of Android variants running on older versions that can do plenty, with an endless array of free and paid apps. Android has the second biggest app market, and has many similarities with the iPhone OS, but pegs itself on being more open. As promised a year ago, we now have phones with Android smarts for lower than Rs. 10,000.

Things an Android phone can do:
A refined browsing experience: pinch to zoom is natively supported on version 2.1 and above phones.
Gmail, Google Maps, Google Latitude, local search and detailed route description.
Twitter, Facebook, and many other cloud-based apps. Push Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, IMAP, POP emails support,
Access to the Android Market, thousands of apps including augmented reality ones like Google Goggles, Layar.
Thousands of games and hacks.
Do note that you cannot purchase paid apps on an Android yet in India. As of 5th October paid applications are available in the market with the price displayed in Indian denominations.

When it comes to free apps, Android has a larger share of those than the iPhone, according to recent surveys.

Since June 2009, over 40 Android phones have been launched in India. There are plenty of high-end phones at iPhone prices - Rs. 30,000 and above, the sweet spot for a mid-range Android phone would be around $300, or Rs. 15,000 and we are finally seeing phones with a HVGA screen at that price range. We're also seeing phones with 4-inch screens at a 20,000 rupee range as of early 2011.

Here's a quick preview of their street and launch prices and specs, and reviews. We're presenting these phones date-wise in a reversed order - latest on top, oldest at the bottom. Feel free to gloat about your bargain deal, and update us on price drops on older Android phones. Comments are open.
