Project Natal: Motion sensing Xbox 360 accessory named Kinect

By Sriram Sharma RSS Sriram Sharma posted Jun 14th 2010 at 10:46AM | Filed under: Gaming » Xbox360

A camera accessory that will turn your body into a game controller on the Xbox 360 has been officially confirmed as Kinect, at a pre-E3 announcement by Microsoft today. Announced as Project Natal at E3 last year, MS has just shown off a Star Wars game, where players can swing there arms around playing lightsaber battles on-screen. Similarly, you would use your hands as a steering wheel in a racing game, or use your fists as gloves in a boxing match. A USA today exclusive lists a racing, river rafting, and dancing title, which as you might expect, is more aerobics exercise than what your average hardcore gamer would bargain for. The Kinect controller (rumoured to be priced $150) will probably be bundled with a bunch of default casual games similar to the Wii, such as the Kinect Sports pack, which contains Boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, soccer, and tablet tennis games. In general, dedicated gamers loathe the Nintendo Wii-platform and dismiss it as casual gaming fare, more suited to non-gamers than gamers. Microsoft also showed off a demo of 4-way video chat working on the device, the built in camera is capable of face recognition. Kinect also has a built-in microphone that can be used to issue voice commands. Official pics of the Kinect below, also a video of a family playing volleyball using Kinect.
