From Apple’s press event: iOS update, next generation iPods and Apple TV

Presenting at a recent press event, Steve Jobs made a handful of major announcements about some of Apple’s products. Starting next week, Apple will publicly release iOS 4.2 which should address bugs with the device’s proximity sensor and Bluetooth capabilities. As for additions, this update will introduce the ability to take HDR photos and a hub for multiplayer gaming called Game Center.

A bulk of the announcements at the event was from Apple’s iPod division. The next generation of iPod Shuffle will once again have control buttons and a clip-on attachment. It will be available in five colours, with storage capacity of 2GB and a price-tag of USD 49. The new iPod Nano’s touch-screen will have multi-touch support and just like the Shuffle, this too will get a clip. The device will be about 40% lighter than before and will be available in six colours. The 8GB Nano costs USD 149 and the 16 GB version costs USD 179. The iPod Touch gets a higher pixel density screen with LED backlight and 24-bit colour output. On the inside, the iPod will carry the same processor that powers the iPhone, along with three axis gyros and a front-facing camera. The 8GB version of the new iPod Touch costs USD 229, the 32GB costs USD 299 and the 64GB version retails for USD 399.

Lastly, Steve Jobs unveiled the new Apple TV which is really small compared to its predecessor and sports a matte black paintjob. The device has no storage device which means you cannot purchase videos, only rent. The rentals will be available through iTunes for just 99 cents, with up to 30 days to start watching and then 48 hours to finish—or watch multiple times. The device has ports HDMI, micro USB, Ethernet and optical audio. To stream content it requires access to a wireless network using its built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi receiver.
