MIT research produces self-sculpting sand
Researchers at MIT’s Distributed Robotics Laboratory claim to have developed an algorithm that helps tiny components, called “smart sand”, to self-assemble as mimic another object. These researchers were able to demonstrate this algorithm by designing cubes of about 10 millimeters, fitted with very basic microprocessors, and magnets on four of their sides. Using this apparatus, the team has been able to work with complex, but two-dimensional shapes.
