Download of the Week: Maryfi
Maryfi is a free utility developed for Windows 7 that creates a virtual router on the computer it is installed on. This allows the user to share an internet connection over Wi-Fi, or in other terms, it turns a computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Once successfully configured, Maryfi can wirelessly share the computer’s access to the internet with devices such as game consoles, laptops, phones, etc.
Microsoft reveals details of Windows Store design
Microsoft has posted a fairly detailed walkthrough of the Windows Store user experience on the MSDN blog. Considering the nature of the blog, the information revealed is more focused towards individual developers or app vendors. The post details the structure of the forthcoming Windows Store, and how the user will be exposed to new and popular apps. In addition, the blog post discusses things like purchasing and/or installation process, along with things like updates and licensing for premium apps.
Download of the Week: FreeMind
FreeMind is open-source mind map creation software written in Java and distributed under GNU GPL V2+ license. Mind maps are typically used to jot down ideas and tasks or to track projects in a non-linear fashion. The proponents of mind maps consider them to be an intuitive and efficient method of recording and retrieving large amount of information.
Apple release iBooks Author as free download
Apple has released e-book authoring software called iBooks Author to create interactive books with multi-touch support. There have been talks about Apple making a big push in the education sector, and this may just be the beginning of it. In keeping with the Apple tradition of doing business, the books created using this app will only function in an Apple environment.
18-inch ASUS LED monitor for just over 5K
The ASUS VS197D monitor offers an opportunity for those still using CFL backlit displays to get on the LED backlit bandwagon. The modestly priced 18-incher has a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels, dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1 and 5ms response rate.
CES 2012: AMD's new APU and Lightning Bolt I/O
AMD, like they typically choose to do, kept things low-key at this year’s CES by sticking to a briefing room instead of a booth on the show floor. During this briefing, the company reps showcased the upcoming Trinity APU based on its Piledriver core, and the Lighting Bolt I/O interface that looks to be in direct competition with Intel’s Thunderbolt.

Total Commander for Android is a port of file managment program for Windows by the same name, developed by Ghisler Software based in Switzerland. While this program for Windows platform is quite matured, currently at version 7+, the Android port of is in a testing phase with release candidate 4 released in December, last year.
CES 2012 Round-up: Laptops and Ultrabooks
Ultrabooks have made more of a splash than tablets and smartphones this year at CES, with OEMS's like Lenovo, Dell, Acer and Samsung showing off their new wares at the event. This year's batch sports Thunderbolt I/O, touch and Windows 8 compatibility, some can optionally boot from an ARM-based core for double the battery life. Here are some highlights from our ultrabook coverage at CES.
CES 2012: Dell XPS 13 joins the ultrabook bandwagon
Dell has is ready to join the gang of Ultrabook vendors with the debut of its XPS 13 joining on sale towards the end of February. Choice of processors available for this Ultrabook will be between Intel Core i5-2467M and Core i7-2637M and choice of storage is between 128GB and 256GB of solid state variety.
CES 2012: 2nd-gen Samsung Series 9 ultraportables revealed
Samsung has launches the second generation of its top of the line ultraportable that retains the moniker of Series 9. The biggest change in the specs comes in the form of new HD+ SuperBright Plus screens with native resolution of 1600x900 pixels. According to Samsung, these new screens have 180% greater brightness, 160-degree viewing angle and anti-reflective coating.
CES 2012: Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga Ultrabook
Lenovo has come up with an intriguing hybrid design in the IdeaPad Yoga Ultrabook. The 360-degree hinge on this computer allows it to flip and fold to be used as a notebook, a tablet or in a tent card display mode.
CES 2012: Lenovo IdeaPad U310, U410 Ultrabook
In the business of personal computers, the year 2012 looks set to be all about Intel’s Ultrabook specification based laptops and Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. Lenovo has entered the fray with hardware revision to the previously released IdeaPad U300’s, in the form of U310 and U410.
CES 2012: Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook
Acer’s contribution to the upcoming deluge of Ivy Bridge based Ultrabooks is the Aspire S5 that was announced ahead of the company’s press conference at this year’s CES. Acer is currently sticking out of the crowd by offering the slimmest packaging measuring just 15mm.
CES 2012: Lenovo ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook
While Lenovo’s IdeadPad U series of Ultrabooks appear to be targeted towards consumers, the company has designed the ThinkPad T430u keeping in mind the business class. The thickness of this Ultrabook will be just shy of one inch and it will sport an SD card reader, two USB ports, an Ethernet jack, and a full-size HDMI socket.
Sony launches XQD cards to replace Compact Flash
While Compact Flash cards may have lost significance among users of devices such as mobile phones and tablet PC, it remains a primary storage media with the shutterbugs. Building on this technology, the CompactFlash Association has developed XQD storage media that will eventually have much higher storage capacity and transfer rates.
