Gurgaon based telecommunications company Olive Telecom has partnered with Airtel for a joint promotion of Olive FrvrOn’ V-G2300—a cell phone that supports both Li-ion batteries as well as AAA dry cells. The company’s objective behind this peculiar design choice for the phone is to take it to Indian towns where the supply of electricity is less than regular. In the event the phone runs out of batteries and there is no immediate power source available, the device will automatically switch to its AAA battery based auxiliary power. In this mode, the power drawn from the AAA battery will not only power the device, but also recharge the main Li-ion batteries. Compared to its unique power system, the rest of the device is quite modest with features like built-in FM receiver, polyphonic ring tones, 1.5” color display, stereo handset and speaker phone.

Airtel is contributing in perhaps the only way it can, by providing access to its network. Under this promotion the Olive FrvrOn’ will be available with a free Airtel connection, right out of the box. However, going by the press release which made this announcement, it seems that this Airtel offer is currently available only in the West Bengal region.

The Olive FrvrOn’ V-G2300 is currently retailing at INR 1,299.
